This is not a sponsored ad but it sure looks like one:) Had a great day with the team at RED in Irvine California yesterday. I am very excited to be starting the next phase of the journey as a visual story teller. Thank you Michael @thekeegzania and Sean @snapamap for showing me around. @sea_legacy and I are super stoked to get to work on an endless stream of expeditions and content production. Get ready for a lot more video content on this feed. #thejourney #gratitude #nature #toolsofthetrade #weapon @reddigitalcinema

Finally, after years of negotiations, the largest marine protected area in the world has been created in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. When you spend such quality time beneath the ice, diving with amazingly charismatic and vulnerable species like these emperor penguins, it is the best news I have heard in a long time. More than 650,000 square miles (an area the size of Spain and France combined) of the Ross Sea around Antarctica will be protected under the deal brokered between 24 countries. #nature #antarctica #mpa #naturelovers @natgeopristineseas @sea_legacy #beauty #instagood

Photograph taken while on assignment in South Georgia, Antarctica. I am often asked whether I get involved when I see a wild animal suffering or dying. As much as possible, I try and be a “fly on the wall” and not get involved in the natural process of life and death in the wild. But, to be fully transparent, of course I rescue wild animals from time to time. I have put eagles back in a tree after a big blow, pulled drowning baby elephant seals out of the surf zone and in this case, pulled this dying baby King Penguin chick out of this hole in the ice. At this stage of life, “Oakum Boys” cannot allow their downy feathers to get wet as it will prove fatal. He shook off the water and waddled back to the colony. As we move forward with @sea_legacy we will not be looking to rescue one animal at a time but to protect entire ecosystems through Marine Protected Areas. #MPA #nature #gratitude #wildlife #follow @thephotosociety @natgeocreative

A polar bear sniffs the arctic wind along the coast of Hudson Bay. This bear has been stranded on land for over four months and waits patiently for the sea ice to freeze so it can once again feast on seals. Once bears are stranded on land, they have access to very little food. Bears are designed to go for long periods of time without a meal, however, the sea ice is melting earlier each spring and freezing later each fall. There are some places in the Arctic where there used to ice year round and now are free of ice for up to 6 months a year. Some scientists are saying that we may see the demise of this species within a hundred years. What do you think? Will they adapt or will they disappear? #bear #polarbear #nature #naturelovers #tbt #photooftheday #picoftheday #beauty #climatechangeisreal

Young polar bear cubs, freshly out of the den peek out from behind their mother as she rests on the sea ice near Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. Polar bears are masters at conserving energy. At this stage, these cubs are drinking milk that has 33% fat content compared to humans at 3-5%. The mother needs to catch seals on a regular basis for survival and energy conversion for her young. #mastersoftheirdoman #nature #naturelovers #bear #polarbears #cute #love #family #beauty #gratitude

Happy Mother’s Day. This mother polar bear coils her body around her young cubs of the year as they wait for the sea ice to freeze. The biggest threat to polar bear cubs at this vulnerable age is the threat of male polar bears. #naturelovers #nature #wildlife #polarbear #bear #arctic #ice #climatechange #beauty

While polar bears are magnificent swimmers, catching food in open water isn’t easy—in fact, it's nearly impossible. The sea is freezing later each fall and melting earlier each spring, diminishing the polar bears' hunting season and their feast. It's up to us to stop climate change and turn the tide. #polarbears #wildlife #bear #beauty #climatechange #photography

A ringed seal watches me from her hole in the ice. Ringed seals keep several breathing holes in the ice to avoid polar bears. As sea ice melts sooner each spring, and freezes later each fall, both seals and bears are rapidly losing their Arctic home. #arctic #ice #climatechange

Just hours old, a newborn elephant seal is brought into its new shocking world of wind, snow and ice on South Georgia, Antarctica. #thejourneybegins

We are still celebrating @barackobama ’s and @justinpjtrudeau ’s big announcement yesterday. I am always trying to explain the difference between multiyear and annual sea ice. This mother walrus and her newborn pup are resting on a piece of multiyear ice. This is ice that lives for many years. It is much thicker and much more dense and is crucial to many species that use it as a floating home. Annual ice comes and goes with each season. So, when scientists say that the Arctic will be completely void of sea ice in the next 20 to 30 years during the summer months, that means that there will be absolutely no sea ice left anywhere in the Arctic for several months each year. What will happen to the walrus, the polar bears the bearded seals, the harp seals and the birds that all rely on some form of ice throughout the summer. We really need to make this connection. Disappearing sea ice is not an industrial opportunity but a gut-wrenching wake up call that our planet is changing faster than we ever imagined and we are so excited that President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau get this. We are simply another species at the top of the food chain and when our global ecosystems crumble, we will crumble with it. #nature #climatechangeisreal #naturelovers #wildlife #ice #seaice #walrus #instagood // @cristinamittermeier and I will continue to lead the world’s best visual story-tellers to all corners of our world’s oceans to keep making this connection. #follow us on this journey.

A ring seal sniffs the afternoon air for any sign of a polar bear before hauling out on the sea ice to sun itself. These little pagophilic (ice loving) seals maintain several breathing holes year round just so they have options if a polar bear is on the hunt. #animalsaresmart #nature #naturelovers
